Khaled al-Asaad 1932-2015
I first paid my respects to Khaled al-Assad back in 2015 in post 63 Roots of Sumer. However, in my archaeology feeds this week, I found the 2020 New Year’s edition of History Arch reminds us of the courage this man displayed in the face of his ISIS executioners. Al-Asaad faced down the ISIS monsters with full knowledge his life was on the line and paid the price to protect the archaeological treasures of Palmyra which he had hidden from them. Of course, ISIS went on to dynamite the above-ground reconstructions. His Wikipedia page was updated a couple of weeks ago.
