Battle of Greeks and Amazons (sculpture on sarcophagus) Credit
Reading this Wikipedia article on Amazons, the focus seems more on playing down the reality of the Amazon legends. The Wiki is updated this month, but it seems to ignore the latest find of four armed Scythian women buried together in Russia. These were found in an ongoing excavation that started in 2010. In the article, the excavation head says they have found ten graves of armed women so far. The Scythians apparently encouraged their women to fight, and from a practical point-of-view, such would be essential for a nomadic people—especially while in the Steppes and surrounded by Scythians of other tribes. The cause of death for these four women has not yet been determined, and by-the-way, don’t overlook the two links on the page this link sent you to, and the five links at the bottom of the second. Here is another article on the same subject with some additional information on the site. And you must watch the splendid video on the Scythians in this article in Ancient Origins, and of course the other links you’ll find here—but first the video!
